18 year old concealed carry is now legal in Utah

During the last legislative session, Utah passed 18-21 year old provisional concealed carry. This will allow anyone between the ages of 18-21 to carry concealed on college campuses and other places that allow concealed carry. The only exception is that they will not be allowed to carry inside public schools, i.e. elementary, junior high, or high schools.

To Act or Re-Act

I recently read a self defense article that made two bold statements: 1) You can't identify criminals just by looking at them and 2) You can only re-act in self defense.

While the first may be slightly true, I believe can be smarter than this. Let's look at three scenarios:
1) Standing in line at the convenience store. The elderly couple in the pharmaceuticals looking at hemorrhoid medication. The cashier behind the counter wearing a corporate uniform and three young adults that came in together. the first got into line without grabbing anything to buy. The seconds seems nervous as he stands at the front door watching the parking lot while the third goes directly to the rear of the store.
2) Getting Gas. there's the lady with a SUV full of kids washing her car windows. The gangbanger pumping gas into the low rider and the nice looking couple parked on the side of the store watching as everyone leaves the store and only then does he get out and go inside.
3) Standing in line at the bank. everything looks normal when a guy in a clown costume (mask, hair, makeup and all) enters.

I'm pretty sure just by looks, you can see the potential criminal. 1) the three young adults (notice I didn't say age, race or how they dress). 2) the couple. if you were thinking the gangbanger, he has already paid for gas and is doing the same thing you are. 3) THE CLOWN. I'm not saying you can dismiss anyone as a threat or just because they look like a criminal they are guilty; but.....you should be adjusting you threat assessment to be watching the potential criminals more closely.

The second statement: we can only re-act. How wrong and potentially FATAL. We must act. Of course we can't pull our weapon and just shoot them, but there are things we can and SHOULD do.....Let's look at the scenarios again.
#1 We can make space, get out of line, go look for another item in the store. Gain cover/concealment, get behind a shelf, display or better yet an appliance. If the situation looks bad enough, make adjustment to get better access to your weapon (DON'T PULL YET). And if it looks that bad, set down your items and leave. There is nothing in the store worth dying for.
#2 Stay at your car. Leave it running if needed. Pay at the pump, don't go in to pre-pay. If you have to pre-pay, go somewhere else. Choose a pump that is close to an exit. and leave as soon as possible. a splash of gas will get you to a friendlier station.
#3 Leaving is obviously the best answer, but I'm not sure I want to be the first person that tries to get past him. If others are leaving, LEAVE. If there is another exit, LEAVE. If you're not leaving get easy access to your weapon (DON'T PULL YET). Make your desision what you are going to do if this is a robbery. Your choices are run, hide or fight. As before gain space, cover/concealment and prep for what is about to happen. If nothing happens, GREAT! you get back in line and have a good day. But, if he makes his intentions known, and it is a robbery...ACT

What ever your choice remember...RUN (Run as fast as you can for an exit. don't stop for anything. GET OUT), Hide (perferably someplace secure that locks. Barricade the door. Remain silent until you KNOW it is safe to come out) or FIGHT (if you choose to fight, FIGHT with all your might. Use every weapon you can, and cheat if you can. AT ALL COST, WIN)

In Obama's speech tonight he used these three statements:
1) Freedom is more powerful than fear.
2) Congress should act to make sure no one on a no fly list is able to buy a gun
3) We need to make it harder for people to buy powerful assault weapon.
While the first is true and may be his best statement of his presidential career,. I was wondering how the next two follow it. The second statement may seem to have merit on the surface, please understand that ANYONE can be put on the no fly list for any reason including you because you voted or not voted in the last election. And once on the list you have to sue the federal government, which we all know how that works, to get off the list. How would you like too find out tomorrow that you have lost all your constitutional right because the federal government said so........And finally, we should ensure freedom by making weapons and equipment available to Syrian fighters but take civilian look a-likes away from us citizens. Few mass murders have used the AR style weapons in their crimes, and these weapons are not the top of the lists for the weapon that the police or civilian experts fear. What the President did tonight was more about politics than saving a single american life inside america's borders.

355th Mass Shooting this year, let's look at the facts.

     The media has reported this and ran with the number without caring about the facts, so we dug into them a little closer.     The number that is being used comes from a site called "Shooting Tracker .com". The group behind the site is an anti-gun, very pro gun control group using Reddit. There is no science behind the numbers but uses public input to gather so called "Incidents". They even went as far as redefining the word Mass Shooting.       For years, the FBI defined "Mass Shooting" as: A violent act where 4 or more "INNOCENTS" where killed by a perpetrator or perpetrators.     This definition wouldn't get the numbers shooting tracker was looking for, so they changed it. their definition is: Any act, with a gun, where 4 or more people (including the perpetrators) are injured or killed. Even this couldn't get them what they wanted, so        They reach (and I mean REACH)....     They have included injuries from car crashes after the shooting.     They have included 28 situations where the gun was a toy or BB gun (they have said they have since removed those 28)     They have included gang and bar fights where someone was arrested with a gun (no shot even fired)     They even included several drug raids where the only injuries were perpetrators being treated for dog bites or drug overdoses from eating evidence.      These seem like "Mass Shootings" right?

Uber driver shoots gunman in Chicago

A gunman, who opened fire in Chicago's Logan Square over the weekend, was met with something he didn't expect...an Uber driver carrying his legally concealed weapon.
Everardo Custodio began firing into the crowd when the Uber driver opened fire and fired six shots at Custodio, hitting him multiple times.
Custodio was taken to the local hospital and treated for wounds in his shin, thigh, and lower back. He is being charged with aggravated assault and unlawful use of a weapon.
The 47 year old Uber driver provided police his legally obtained concealed carry permit and will not be charged.

Elderly Couple shows intruder who is boss

An elderly couple in New Mexico showed a burglar who was in charge. As police arrived on scene after getting phone calls about an apparent robbery in progress they saw the assailant leaning against a car with his hands on his head. The 70 year old man and his 66 year old wife both had guns pointed at the alleged robber.

Breast-feeding mother fights off home invader

21 year old Samatha Bruce, who is in the national guard, was in the process of breast-feeding her son when intruders barged into the room. As they opened fire, Bruce fired back with her own weapon. Her son was uninjured, but Bruce was shot twice and is still in the hospital recovering from those wounds.

14 year old babysitter defends his siblings

A 14 year old boy from Phoenix, AZ is being called a hero after using a handgun to defend the children he was watching (who happened to be his siblings) from an armed intruder.

The children were home along when a strange women knocked on the door. The 14 year old didn't recognize her, so he didn't answer the door. Soon after that they heard banging on the door, so the boy rushed his siblings to his parents room and grabs the handgun.

When the boy reached the top of the stairs he saw a man come in and point a gun at him. The man did not get a shot off and was treated  at the local hospital. The women, however, got away.

82 year old uses gun to defend himself from home invader

An 82 year old man in Missouri used his handgun to defend himself against a 30 year old home invader.
The elderly man shot the burglar, in self defense,  after he was assaulted. The intruder fled the scene as was later arrested and treated for a bullet wound to the shoulder.

Teen in SC shoots, kill robber using his mothers handgun

A 13 year old shot and killed a would be robber in South Carolina. The boy grabbed his mom's 9mm Glock after he saw a strange car park behind his home and witnessed an armed man get out and run into the woods.
The teen opened fire when the armed man started breaking down the backdoor.

Murder rate drops as concealed carry permits rise, study claims

A dramatic spike in the number of Americans with permits to carry concealed weapons coincides with an equally stark drop in violent crime, according to a new study, which Second Amendment advocates say makes the case that more guns can mean safer streets.

The study by the Crime Prevention Research Center found that 11.1 million Americans now have permits to carry concealed weapons, up from 4.5 million in 2007. The 146 percent increase has come even as both murder and violent crime rates have dropped by 22 percent.

“When you allow people to carry concealed handguns, you see changes in the behavior of criminals," said the center’s president, John R. Lott, a Fox News contributor. “Some criminals stop committing crimes, others move on to crimes in which they don’t come into contact with victims and others actually move to areas where they have less fear of being confronted by armed victims.”

Increasing gun ownership, litigation and new state laws have all contributed to the rise in concealed carry permits. In March, Illinois became the 50^th state to begin issuing concealed weapons permits. But the cost and other requirements for obtaining the permits varies greatly, from South Dakota, where a permit requires $10, a background check and no training, to Illinois, where the cost of obtaining a permit comes to more than $600 when the fee and cost of training programs are taken into account.

Six states don’t require a permit for legal gun owners to conceal their weapons, and Lott notes those states have some of the lowest violent crime rates in the nation.

The real measure of the deterrent effect of concealed carry permits, according to Lott, is not laws on the books, but the percentage of a given state’s population that holds the permits. In 10 states, more than 8 percent of adults hold concealed carry permits, and all are among the states with the lowest crime rates. Lott claims his group’s analysis shows that each one percentage point increase in the adult population holding permits brings a 1.4 percent drop in the murder rate.

“We found that the size of the drop [in crime] is directly related to the percentage of the population with permits,” Lott said.

Between 2007 and the preliminary estimates for 2013, murder rates have fallen from 5.6 to 4.4 per 100,000.

Tod Burke, a former police officer and a professor of criminal justice at Radford University, in Radford, Va., said he doesn’t buy the idea that gun permits are driving the reduction in crime. Burke said several factors, including smarter, “data-driven” policing and increased incarceration of violent criminals likely play a bigger role.

“I think we have to be cautious about having a causal relationship between gun permits and a decrease in crime,” Burke said. “[Lott’s] theory is one to consider, but not to the exclusion of others.”

The report is the first tally of concealed carry permit holders since a survey in 2011 by the U.S. Government Accountability Office found that 8 million Americans held them.

The total of 11,113,013 Americans who currently hold concealed carry permits represents 4.8 percent of the total adult population. But the center stated that the number of concealed carry permit holders is likely much higher, because numbers are not available for all states that issue permits, such as New York. Additionally, four states and the majority of Montana do not require that residents have a concealed handgun permit to carry within the state, so the number of residents who carry a concealed weapon is not recorded.

Florida has the most active concealed carry permits, at nearly 1.3 million. Texas is second, at just more than 708,000, while Hawaii, at 183, has the fewest of states whose data was available.

Earlier this year, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that California must allow law-abiding citizens to carry concealed firearms in public, striking down the core of the state's permit system for handguns.  The judges found in a 2-1 holding that San Diego County’s rule that residents must show "good cause" -- and not merely the desire to protect themselves -- to obtain a concealed-weapons permit, violated their constitutional rights.

That ruling is awaiting an en banc review by the entire circuit.

Nevada press release for Arizona Concealed Permit

March 1, 2013

On February 28, 2013 the Nevada Sheriffs’ and Chiefs’ association voted

unanimously to end the recognition of Arizona concealed weapon permits.

Effective the date of this release the State of Nevada will no longer recognize

Arizona concealed weapon permits.

This action was taken in accordance with Nevada Revised Statue 202.3689. The

Nevada Department of Public Safety is charged with the responsibility to audit

other states’ concealed weapon laws and training regulations. In accordance with

Nevada law other states must have an electronic database of permit holders,

which is accessible 24 hours a day by law enforcement, and their training

standards must be substantially similar to, or more stringent than the State of

Nevada.

In early February the NvSCA was notified by Las Vegas area firearms instructors

that Arizona had substantially altered their training requirements to standards

below that required by Nevada.

The Nevada Department of Public Safety contacted the Arizona Department of

Public Safety to conduct an audit. Arizona DPS confirmed significant changes

were made by their legislative body in 2010 and 2011. Some of the more

significant changes removed statutory minimum training requirements and

removed statutory marksmanship and judgmental shooting requirements. These

changes created a substantially dissimilar training requirement in comparison to

Nevada.

At the February 28th meeting of the NvSCA DPS officials presented their audit

findings, and subsequently the NvSCA voted to end the recognition of Arizona

concealed weapon permits.

Reality of the assult weapons ban

The highest number of gun violence in US history was in 1929. Mass shootings have been on a steep decline in recent years. In the 1980’s there were 32 mass shootings in the US. In the 1990’s there were 42 mass shootings even after the Brady Bill Assault Weapons Ban was passed. Between 2000 and 2009 there were only 26 mass shootings in the US and the assault weapons ban expired in 2004. Since 1992 school shootings have dropped 42%.

Even the authors of the original assault weapons ban agreed it had absolutely no effect on violent crime in the US. All the any assault weapons ban will do is restrict honest Americans 2^nd Amendment rights.
